French EPR for packaging: what the texts say, who registers, with whom

Updated 15 October 2026 · by Bachir Djebaili, founder of REP·Pro

Direct answer: Packaging is the EPR category every online seller meets first: the product's own packaging and the shipping box. French texts split it in two schemes: household packaging (approved eco-organisations Citeo, Léko and Adelphe) and, from 1 January 2027, professional packaging (Citeo Pro, Léko Pro, Twiice). The producer is the one who first places the packaged product on the French market; one unique identifier per scheme. It is you who determine which scheme your packaging falls under.

What falls in this category

Everything that wraps, protects or carries a product up to the French buyer: the sales packaging of the item, the grouped packaging, the shipping box, the filling material, the tape, the label. French texts count packaging by material (paper and cardboard, plastic, glass, steel, aluminium, wood, other) and by weight; the declaration you will make through the representative is a table of materials and tonnages, or units for small volumes, per year.

Who the texts call the producer

For packaging, the producer is the person who first places the packaged product on the French market: the one who packs it, or who imports it packed, or who sells it at a distance to a French buyer from abroad. A producer established outside France can, since 10 July 2026, act through an authorised representative established in France (under article L. 541-10-9-1 of the Code de l'environnement). Whether your company is that producer depends on how your goods reach France; the texts are the reference, and you make that determination.

The two schemes and their eco-organisations

The producer chooses one eco-organisation per scheme; the contributions are set by each eco-organisation's published scale, with modulations by material and recyclability. MyEPR does not recommend one over another; the choice is yours, and the mandate records it.

The number

One unique identifier per scheme, format FRxxxxxx_xx, issued through the eco-organisation and listed in the ADEME register. A seller registered for household packaging and, from 2027, for professional packaging receives two. How to read the number →

What MyEPR does for this category

Under the mandate, REP·Pro, established in France, joins the eco-organisation you choose for this category, obtains your unique identifier, files the declarations from the volumes you provide and remains your contact in France. The eco-contributions are invoiced by the eco-organisation at its published rates and re-invoiced to you at cost; the plan price is the only fee. One category is the Starter plan (€29 a month or €249 a year, 12-month plan); with other categories it counts towards Pro or Complete. Pricing · Mandate · How it works.

This page describes the French texts and the service. It is you who determine whether your products fall under this category and whether your company is the producer: the criteria are those of the texts, and the eco-organisations publish their own guides. MyEPR registers you for the categories you tick; it does not decide them for you.

FAQ

Is a shipping box I buy empty my packaging?

French texts treat the packaging added for a sale to a consumer as household packaging of that sale. Who is the producer of a box bought empty and filled by the seller is not settled by any published source we have read; the eco-organisations' membership guides treat the filler as the one who places the packaged product on the market. You decide with your adviser; we register what you tick.

Household or professional packaging?

Household packaging is the packaging of products consumed or used by households; professional packaging is the packaging of products delivered to businesses. The professional scheme applies from 1 January 2027, with three eco-organisations approved on 5 June 2026 for that wider scope. A seller to both consumers and businesses can fall under both schemes.

Which number does Amazon want for packaging?

The unique identifier of your packaging registration, format FRxxxxxx_xx, in the packaging line of its compliance screen. Enrolling in Amazon's Pay on Behalf service for packaging does not replace the number, according to Amazon's own help pages read on 12 October 2026.

Do I have to print the Triman logo?

French rules on sorting information (Triman and the sorting instructions) apply to household packaging placed on the French market; the eco-organisation provides the marking files to its members. We forward them; applying them to your packaging is your decision as producer.
